Varakhsha is an ancient town site 30 km west of Bukhara in Jondor district. It held the palace of the Bukhar-khudat rulers; today mud-brick walls and mounds spread over 100 hectares and take about an hour to walk. The desert at the edge of the Bukhara oasis is windy and shadeless — bring sun protection.
